The Cheese & Crackers
⚪️ "I am in chains and able to grasp heavenly things, the ranks of the angels, the hierarchy of principalities, things visible and invisible". By St. Ignatius Martyr, who died 107 A.D.
🔴 " 'Angel’ is the name of their office, not of their nature. If you seek the name of their nature, it is ‘spirit'. If you seek the name of their office, it is ‘angel’: from what they are, ‘spirit,’ from what they do, ‘angel." By St. Augustine,
⚫️ "We cannot conclude our catechesis on God, Creator of the world, without devoting adequate attention to a precise item of divine Revelation: the creation of purely spiritual beings which Sacred Scripture calls "angels." This creation appears clearly in the Creeds, especially in the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed: "I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, of all things (that is, entia or beings) seen and unseen." We know that man enjoys a unique position within the sphere of creation: by his body he belongs to the visible world, while by his spiritual soul which vivifies the body, he is as it were on the boundary between the visible and invisible creation. To the latter, according to the Creed which the Church professes in the light of Revelation, belong other beings, purely spiritual, therefore not proper to the visible world even though present and working therein. They constitute a world apart". By St. John Paul II
🔵 "Today, as in times past, these spiritual beings are discussed with greater or lesser wisdom. One must recognize that at times there is great confusion, with the consequent risk of passing off as the Church's faith on the angels what does not pertain to it, or, vice versa, of neglecting some important aspect of the revealed truth. The existence of spiritual beings, which Sacred Scripture usually calls "angels," was denied already in Christ's time by the Sadducees (cf. Acts 23:8). It is denied also by materialists and rationalists of every age but, as a modern theologian acutely observes, 'if one wishes to get rid of the angels, one must radically revise Sacred Scripture itself, and with it the whole history of salvation'. The whole of Tradition is unanimous on this point. The Church's Creed is basically an echo of what Paul writes to the Colossians: 'for in him (Christ) all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominations or principalities or authorities — all things were created through him and for him' (Col 1:16). That is to say, Christ who, as the Son-Word eternal and consubstantial with the Father, is the first-born of all creation (Col 1:15), is at the center of the universe, as the reason and cornerstone of all creation, as we have already seen in the previous catecheses, and as we shall see later when we shall speak more directly of him". By St. John Paul II

📖 Matthew 18:10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, * for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my Heavenly Father"
On day at chapel while spending time before the Blessed Sacrament in Eucharistic Adoration, it came to mind how good it is to be prompted by the Holy Spirit to study and do an Ijournal entry about the seven choirs of archangels. Mae was the catalyst to start this ball rolling. We had a spiritual conversation which led me to research something for her. We were surprised to find out that there were more than three archangels. She mentioned something to her sister about the number seven, and her sister said, "you must mean nine and not seven". Like us, she was not aware that there are seven choirs of archangels and nine choirs of angels. Most people are familiar with the three common archangels: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The other four archangels: Uriel, Jehudiel, Sealtiel, and Barachiel, may be totally foreign to many. Maybe this will be a "News To Me" point for some of you who are reading, but for others in "the know", PTL ( Praise The Lord) for your spiritual maturity.
The research on the choirs of angels, served a twofold purpose in my prayer life:
1⃣. It was expedient in tweaking and fine tuning, preparing the soil of my soul for further spiritual growth.
2⃣. While reading a bit from the book: "Abandonment to Divine Providence", it increased my desire for being concerned with what may be God's will in activities of daily living. The angels can help us in a great way, directing everyone that is open to their guidance to travel along the right path.

More fascinating facts that intrigued me:
✒️ "Saint Ambrose enumerates the nine Choirs of Angels in ascending order from Angels to Seraphim, without any hesitation. Saint Augustine, on the contrary, candidly admits his ignorance regarding any difference between the Angelic orders". Info from EWTN
✒️ "In 1040, St. Celias made an exhaustive study of the approved writings of the Early Church Fathers up to the 4th Century. Through his studies we have come to know seven of the names of the Archangels, the meaning of their names and the sacrament each is the patron of"
✒️ "In the 16th Century, Michelangelo was ordered to adorn the church of St. Maria Degli, dedicated to Mary and the Seven Archangels with a fresco of seven Archangels on the altar"
✒️ "During the reign of Pope Gregor XIII it was intended to be build seven separate chapels, one for each of the Seven Archangels"
✒️ "Liturgy to Seven Archangels has been confirmed and was still in practice around the year 1800, it has not been abolished, just not in practice", info from this site: http://catholicfaithwarriors.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-seven-archangels.html
My fascination is with the Sixth Choir: "Dominations". It seems that great assistance can be obtained from that Choir in regards to the GIG apostolate and in my personal life. In the spiritual life there are many stepping stones that can lead us along a never ending path of our journey towards holiness. As we seek to deepen out personal experience with God more and more, the horizon expands and explodes. The following excerpt explains the role of the Angels of the Sixth Choir: "Dominations". The complete article can be found here:
http://www.catholictradition.org/Angels/angels10b.htm
"Zeal for the Divine glory distinguished the Dominations. They are consumed by their yearning for the interests of God---their principal office is to manifest His will. We, too, ought to be interested in all that concerns the honor of this ever Adorable Being, such as the conversion of sinners, the perfection of the just, the decoration of altars. We should also beg of God to manifest His will to us by these Blessed "Intelligences"---and then take care to fulfill it scrupulously, as being the shortest way to perfection and sanctity. We must pray to these Angels for the spread of God's kingdom upon earth, for the conversion of heretics and infidels, and for the return of lukewarm and fallen away Catholics to the practice of the faith. In the time of despondency or despair, one must call these Angels to help, for they exercise great power against such temptations. Although this Choir is mentioned in the preface of the Mass, [the Dominions adore], very few think of invoking them, and still these Angels strive with much zeal to spread God's reign on earth.
🔹 For Practice-- Give practical proof of your zeal for the glory of God; do something for His reign in souls, as instructing the ignorant, etc.
🔹 For Recitation, the following Aspiration-- "Holy Dominations! animate us with thy zeal."

now learning how it's possible for me to pray in a more effective way, that is by utilizing the expertise of the Principalities. Read the following about that Choir: "They are also appointed to transmit to the Angels of the last two Choirs the orders of the Most High. Purity of intention is the virtue ascribed to them, for in their high functions they never seek but the honor and interest of God alone. Let us imitate them. It is the intention which stamps the action with merit or demerit".
No better way to pray than by asking intercessors to assist us, especially the ones who have been given certain specific tasks by God. If someone should have a beef with that by saying that it's all about going straight to God. My response is this :
Abiding in God, and walking united to Him, we can't help but go straight to God. We are to be about living in God. That act is primary. However, it was God Himself who decided to share His Divine life with all of us, angels and men, spirits and mortals. All have been given assignments and various tasks to perform. Everything, all of creation was designed to function in harmony. Unity is the name of the game. We are to follow the protocol. For instance, God could have just sent down His beloved Son miraculously, but He in His infinite wisdom decided to use the Blessed Virgin to bear the Savior. In the old testament He could have dispensed with Moses hands being held up in order to win the victory, but He chose to operate in the manner that He did.
📖 Exodus 17(11-22). "So it came about when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy. Then they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set".
Like so, we have intercessors, heavenly and earthly ones that can aid and help us as we pray. Read somewhere a while back that prayer is the method to awaken divine action, well saying Amen to that!

Pope Leo XIII is a member of my "trio + one" favorite popes. The other three are: St. JPII, St. Pius X, & St. JXXIII. Who are among your favorites?
Article: "The Vision of Pope Leo XIII and the Origins of the St. Michael Prayer" By Faith Warriors
Info from this site: http://catholicfaithwarriors.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-seven-archangels.html
"Exactly 33 years to the day prior to the great Miracle of the Sun in Fatima, that is, on October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. When the aged Pontiff had finished celebrating Mass in his private Vatican Chapel, attended by a few Cardinals and members of the Vatican staff, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the above prayer to St. Michael, with instructions it be said after all Low Masses everywhere. When asked what had happened, he explained that, as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices - two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation:
➰ The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasted to Our Lord: "I can destroy your Church."
➰ The gentle voice of Our Lord: "You can? Then go ahead and do so."
➰ Satan: "To do so, I need more time and more power."
➰ Our Lord: "How much time? How much power?
➰ Satan: "75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will
give themselves over to my service."
➰ Our Lord: "You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will."
In 1886, Pope Leo XIII decreed that this prayer to St. Michael be said at the end of "low" Mass (not "high", or sung Masses) throughout the universal Church, along with the Salve Regina (Hail, Holy Queen); and the practice of the congregation praying these prayers at the end of Mass continued until about 1970, with the introduction of the new rite of the Mass.
However, at the end of his Angelus message given in St. Peter’s Square, Sunday, April 24, 1994, Pope John Paul II (St. JPII) urged Catholics to recite this prayer to Saint Michael
"The prayer can fortify us for that spiritual battle about which the Letter to the Ephesians speaks [of]:
📖 Ephesians 6:10 "Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power."
And to this same battle that the Book of the Apocalypse refers [to], recalling in front of our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel
📖 Revelations 12:7 "Then war broke out in heaven; Michael* and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back"
Surely, this scene was very present to Pope Leon XIII, when, at the end of the previous century, he introduced to the entire Church a special prayer to St. Michael:
🙏 St. Michael the Archangel Defend us in this day of battle!
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him we humbly pray,
And do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
By the Power of God— Cast into hell satan and all the evil spirits
Who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen
Even if today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of the Eucharistic celebration, I invite all to not forget it, but to recite it in order to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and the spirit of this world."

Article: "The Hierarchy of Angels, from the "The 7 great Archangels Information Site"
Site address: http://7archangels.info/Archangel_Panel___Links.html
“Since the 4th century, nine choirs or types of angels are identified in the Bible:
🔘 The Nine Choir of Angels 🔘
📌The first three choirs see and adore God directly.
✏️1.The seraphim, which mean “the burning ones,” have the most intense “flaming” love for God and comprehend Him with the greatest clarity. They are the only rank of angels with the Essence of God. [Lucifer, which means “light bearer,” was a Seraphim whose beautiful light was changed into darkness.]
✏️2. The cherubim, which means “fullness of wisdom,” contemplate God’s divine providence and plan for His creatures.
✏️3. Lastly, the thrones, symbolizing divine justice and judicial power, contemplate God’s power and justice.
📌The next three choirs fulfill God’s providential plan for the universe:
✏️4. The dominations or dominions, whose name evokes authority, govern the lesser choirs of angels.
✏️5. The virtues, whose name originally suggested power or strength, implement the orders from the dominations and govern the heavenly bodies that are (called the firmament) between heaven and earth.
✏️6. Lastly, the powers confront and fight against any evil forces opposed to God’s providential plan.” [These all respond to the intellect of man with virtue as the central rank of angels that determine dominion over the influences of the flesh, the world, and the devil. As will be shown later, the Holy Family Rosary will increase our pondering of the importance for virtues’ practice in our lives.]
📌The last three choirs are directly involved in human affairs:
✏️7. The principalities care for earthly principalities, such as nations or cities.
✏️8. The archangels deliver God’s most important messages to mankind,
✏️9. The angels; while each angel serves as a guardian for each of us. Although not official dogma, this schema became popular in the Middle Ages in the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, Dante, Hildegard of Bingen, and John Scotus Erigina.”
We now have great cause to remember why it was said that Christ is 'above all principality, and power, and virtue, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come', and the reason for believing 'If God be for us, who is against us?' When acknowledging these wonderful beings, who would dare say that angels are unimportant references for our lives within today’s morally corrupt ways?"
🔘 The Seven Archangels 🔘
✏️1. St. Michael's name means "Who is like unto God?". Patron of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
He is Leader of the Armies of Heaven. As a warrior he defends not only our souls against the infernal enemy when we call on him, but he also defends Our Lord, Who is helpless in the Blessed Sacrament. This is a portent of his authority to punish those who sin against this Sacrament.
✏️2. St. Gabriel's name means "God Conquers/ the might of God" Patron of the Sacrament of Baptism
St. Gabriel is the Archangel of the Annunciation and the Incarnation's triumph over sin & death. His lilies represent the new purity of the soul through the sacraments of Baptism and Confession, both sacraments made possible by the Redemption. His banner is a declaration of Our Lady's universal motherhood.
✏️3. St. Raphael's name means "God heals/ the healing of God" Patron of the Sacrament of Penance
Raphael carries a jug of oil for annointing. The fish traditionally symbolizes the soul and the oil the healing of it's ailments through confession. The fish is also a reminder of the story of his protection of young Tobias and healing his father Tobit.
✏️4. St. Uriel's name means "Fire of God" Patron of the Sacrament of Confirmation.
He carries the Sword of Truth for Soldiers of Christ, which we become through this sacrament. Fire reminds us of the descent of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost and the flames of the gifts of the Holy Ghost. It reminds us that our hearts should burn with love for God like the holiest of Seraphim, like the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. St. Uriel carries the scales by which we are to weigh our actions. It is also a reminder of the Scales of Perfect Justice by which our lives are weighed at our judgement.
✏️5. St. Jehudiel's name means "Praise of God". Patron of the Sacrament of Extreme Unction, annointing of the sick & dying.
St. Jehudiel carries the flaming crown of salvation, a symbol of God's mercy & the crown of the victory of grace which awaits the saints in the next life. It is also a reminder of the crown of sufferings to be endured in this life in imitation of Our Lord.
✏️6. St. Sealtiel's name means "Prayer of God" Patron of the Sacrament of Holy Orders
St Sealtiel carries an incenser, symbol of the prayers & offering of the Divine Sacifice of the Mass, only through the actions of the ordained.
Apoc 8:3-4 "And another angel came and stood before the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given him much incense, that he should offer of the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar, which is before the throne of God. And the smoke of the incense of the prayers of the saints ascended up before God from the hand of the angel."
✏️7. St. Barachiel's name means "Blessings of God". Patron of the Sacrament of Matrimony.
Barachiel carries an abundant basket of bread, the staff of life, symbolizing Christian parenthood and it's grave responsibilities both spiritual & temporal, to produce and provide for, the children God desires of married couples. He is a powerful intercessor for the barren as well as for troubled marriages. He carries in his hand a book, a reminder of the wealth of instructions in the Holy Scripture, the writings of the saints and Papal encyclicals for husbands, wives and children concerning marriage and family life".

Summary: The moderns pooh-pooh belief in angels, although they have no problem believing in aliens. The moderns hope for a discovery of life on other planets, thinking it would put belief in God and Jesus in jeopardy. We already believe in extraterrestrials — the angels. Angels are a race of beings far superior to us. But there are bad angels, too, who despise both us and God. Our guardian angels try to help us get to heaven. At the end of our lives, they will have the joy of knowing that they helped us get there.
